A common misconception when using wireless networking is that it is equally as fast or faster than a hard-wired network connection. This is simply untrue. The average hard wired connection in SDUSD has a typical bandwidth of 80-100 Megabits per Second (Mb/s) depending on your network topology and the device you are using. On the other hand, an SDUSD wireless network has an average of 22-24 Mb/s. As clients continue to connect wirelessly, you will experience slower and slower speeds. In layman's terms, a single wireless computer will be faster than a classroom of computers connected to the same Wireless Access Point. Therefore 30-40 classroom computers simultaneously using the wiresless network will potentialy give each user less than 1 Mb/s. Looking at the diagram below of the wireless school network, you will notice a single connection to the Wireless Access Point that all users will share as their connection to the internet. When using a hard wired connection each computer will have its own line at the same speed the single access point has for all its users. 
Wireless planning includes signal strength determination and client count as well as a few other factors such as design of the site wired network and access to it. This is why it is critical to discuss your wireless needs with the district’s I.T. department so they can plan a successful wireless solution that fits your needs today and into the future. Please read and understand the wireless network setup procedure below before purchasing.
Procedure for Getting Wireless Network Service and Equipment  1. To determine your wireless network needs, fill out an I.T. Service Request and send to the Ed Center, Room 1110. The IT Service Request starts a site walk by an IT DataCom tech to determine
the number of wireless access points (WAPs) needed.
2. Soon after the site walk is complete which may include additional consultation with the IT DataCom group, the IT DataCom tech will provide a recommendation of the type and number of district standard WAPs the school will need to purchase.
3. The school can then create an ePro purchase order and Procurement will have the equipment delivered to the IT Department for configuration.
4. The school will then be scheduled according to the order as these type of Service Requests are received. Each school is notified of their installation date.
5. IT DataCom will install configured wireless access points and provide information to the site on how to configure laptops to access wireless connections.
6. If you have any district standard WAP's on your site that have not been configured or installed, you will need to submit an IT Service Request to get it configured to district protocols.
